Frequently Asked Questions

What is MobIncentive?

Have something you're passionate about? Share your idea with the world and see who else wants to pile on and get something done. Your idea might be small ("I want a cure for hiccups"), or big ("I want a manned mission to Mars"). It might be personal ("I want my brother to stop smoking") or global ("Save the black rhino"). Serious ("I want basic personal finance taught in schools") or humorous ("I want someone to streak my office"). Attract enough fame and fortune to your idea and you may change the world. MobIncentive.com works through collective incentives. Anyone can post an idea or challenge, and anyone can "pile on" to ideas they like with fame and/or fortune. As people "put their money where their mouths are" the reward for taking action on that idea grows.

Where did this idea come from?

There is a long history of prizes and cash rewards being used to get things done. If not for the Orteig Prize we may never have heard of Charles Lindbergh. The Nobel Prize is not only an honor, it's a $1.4 million dollar incentive for great science. More recently the Ansari X Prize brought us a reusable spacecraft, and the X Prize Foundation is working on other large scale prizes. MobIncentive.com is designed to give you the power to start your own competitions. You can share the things that you care about and find other people willing to help. Make your own prize; change the world.

How does it work?

People see things they'd like to change everyday (e.x. "Why doesn't my city have free WiFi?"). They submit these ideas to MobIncentive.com and invite their friends to contribute fame and/or fortune. The ideas with merit will attract enough of a reward to motivate action. As people take action they can submit solutions to the idea through MobIncentive.com. The idea judge (usually the creator of the idea) picks a winning solution, and the person who submitted that solution gets the accumulated fame and fortune. What is a judge?

A judge is chosen by an idea creator (often they choose themselves) to determine the outcome for a specific idea. They get to choose the winning solution for an idea and reject ideas as they are submitted. They can also close an idea without a winner (eg. all the snow melted before someone could build a 20-foot snowman). Judges wield a lot of power so choose them wisely.

How can I trust the judge to make a reasonable decision?

Judges are users of this site, and they accumulate a reputation as they use the site. You can see a user's judge rating by viewing their 'Trust' on their profile page. Each piece of feedback a judge receives is worth anywhere from -2 to +2 trust points. If a judge has a really low trust rating, you probably don't want to contribute to and solve an idea. NOTE: You can view all feedback submitted about a judge by clicking on the 'Trust' rating.

What are fame points?

Fame points are a measure of popularity (or notoriety). Users start with a small amount of fame and can accumulate more by completing ideas. Users can "pile on" fame points to ideas they support. Even if you don't have money to contribute to an idea you can always help out by adding fame points.

What are fame points good for?

Nothing material right now. In the future, we'll be doing more with fame points.

How do monetary contributions (Fortune) work?

When you contribute money (fortune) to an idea, you are making a pledge to pay the winner of a contest when the judge decides that the content is completed. You don't pay any money up front, and we do not enforce payment. If you decide not to pay, it will affect your trust rating and you will start moving up the list of debtors on the site.

How do I win money?

You can collect the money from an idea by submitting a solution that is picked by the idea's judge. Each contributor will pay you via PayPal, so make sure you have an account to receive the funds. You can track the money you owe and money owed to you by going to the accounting page. Just like real life there is no guarantee that everyone who owes you money will pay. MobIncentive.com has a reputation system, and the biggest debtors can be found here.

Are there any transaction fees?

MobIncentive does not charge any transaction fees, but you may incur some fees from using PayPal to receive funds, depending on what kind of account you have with them.

What is an expiration date for an idea?

Some ideas are only good for a specific time period (eg. shovel the snow off the school roof), so during idea creation we allow you to specify how long an idea lasts. Our system will automatically shut down contributions and submissions to an idea that hasn't been judged by midnight (Pacific Time) of the expiration date you specify. After the expiration date has passed, it is up to the judge to make a call on the challenge by either closing it or accepting one of the solutions.

What are "popular" ideas?

Popular ideas are those that have had a lot of recent activity. The popularity rating depends primarily on the number and ammount of recent pile ons. An idea that has a $5 pile on an hour ago will be more popular than an idea that had a $10 pile on a week ago. We also consider the number of recent comments, solutions and views.
